Aspiring Leaders Cohort 2: Jeremy Richardson, Maureen Zorn, Beth O'Brien, Heather Donegan, Chelsea Blovat, Madeline Manheim

The Aspiring Leaders Program launched its second cohort last night, January 21, 2025 at TST BOCES, bringing together the region’s education leaders to recognize and support the professional growth of emerging talent in the field. The program continues its mission of fostering leadership excellence within our local school communities in the Tompkins, Seneca, and Tioga counties.

The kickoff dinner highlighted the collaborative spirit and dedication that define the Aspiring Leaders Program. Co-instructors Cindy Walter, Assistant Superintendent for Instructional & Career Services at TST BOCES, and Michelle Brantner, retired Superintendent of Marcellus CSD, were joined by Joe Menard from SUNY Cortland’s Educational Administration Program and TST BOCES District Superintendent Lily Talcott. Superintendents from TST component districts, including Ms. Chris Pettograsso of Lansing CSD, Ms. Margo Martin of Groton CSD, and Mr. Eric Hartz of Newfield CSD, were also present, all of whom have played a vital role in identifying and recommending participants for the program.

Administrators across the region nominate individuals from their districts who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential. These nominees apply to the program by submitting an essay and participating in an interview process, with final selections made collaboratively by regional education leaders.

During last night’s dinner, each leader shared personal anecdotes and insights from their leadership journeys, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs that shaped their careers. They highlighted the unique qualities and potential of each participant, recognizing them as emerging leaders already making a positive impact in their school districts. Through this program, these individuals are poised to create lasting change within the broader educational community.

The second cohort of TST Aspiring Leaders includes:

  • Chelsea Blovat, Communications Coordinator at TST BOCES

  • Heather Donegan, 8th Grade Teacher at Newfield Central School District

  • Madeline Manheim, Coordinator of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at TST BOCES

  • Megan McVey, 3rd Grade Teacher at Lansing Central School District

  • Beth O’Brien, Special Education Teacher at Groton Central School District

  • Jeremy Richardson, Technology Teacher at Lansing Central School District

  • Maureen Zorn, New Visions Life Science Teacher at TST BOCES

Last night marked the official start of EDL 629: Introduction to Leadership, the first course in the Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) program. The course is a semester-long program offered through SUNY Cortland, where these leaders-turned-students will engage in coursework designed to explore foundational principles of educational leadership. Through dynamic discussions, case studies, and practical assignments, participants will deepen their understanding of the skills and strategies required to lead effectively in today’s complex and ever-changing educational landscape.

A unique feature of the Aspiring Leaders Program is its integration of academic study with hands-on experience. Participants are promised mentorship from the region’s current administrators and in-area internships upon completion of their CAS degree.

The program’s collaborative approach underscores the commitment of local school districts and TST BOCES to cultivating a new generation of leaders who will positively impact education in the region.

Assistant Superintendent Cindy Walter emphasized the significance of the program, stating:
“The Aspiring Leaders Program is not just about developing new leaders but about creating a network of support and shared learning that strengthens our entire region. It’s inspiring to see so many dedicated professionals come together to empower the next generation of educational leaders.”

As the evening concluded, the room was filled with enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose. The second cohort of TST Aspiring Leaders is poised to carry forward the program’s mission—to foster excellence, inspire growth, and shape the future of education in the Tompkins, Seneca, and Tioga counties.
