Dot Day cookiesSmith School held “Dot Day,” an activity inspired by the award-winning book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.

The Dot tells the story of a girl as she is encouraged to begin her creative journey and learns to have confidence in expressing herself artistically. Every September, International Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration centered around the book.

Dot Day at Smith School was a school-wide event held Tuesday, September 17. Activities were based around the themes of the book, with classes reading the book together, decorating their door or hallway boards and participating in other art projects. Many activities were tied to the principles of the Circle of Courage: belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.

The event provided an opportunity for students across Smith School to engage with the themes of the book together as a community and participate in ways appropriate to each class. It was a creative and uplifting start to the school year for all who participated.
