American Heart Association – Basic Life Support (BLS)
This is the Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider course from the American Heart Association. The course is designed to provide all school personnel with the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a timely and effective manner. The course is intended for all school personnel including; school nurses, teachers, coaches, maintenance staff, custodians, bus drivers, administrators, support staff and aides whether certified or non-certified as well as licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals. BLS certification is good for 2 years from completion of the course.
The Initial Course is a four hour basic course which teaches the fundamentals of basic life support using classroom, video and instructor-led instruction. There is no pre-requisite for this course.
The Refresher Course is a three hour refresher which reinforces fundamental skills of basic life support using classroom, video and instructor-led instruction as well as providing updates to methods and protocols for basic life support. Current CPR/AED certification or the Initial Course are pre-requisites for this course.
American Heart Association – Heartsaver First Aid
This is a Heartsaver® First Aid from the American Heart Association. The course is designed to teach skills to the layperson. The Heartsaver® First Aid certification is good for 2 years.
This course does NOT satisfy the State Education Department’s requirement for First Aid for Coaches certification.
The course is a 3 hour basic course which teaches skills to the layperson using classroom, video and instructor-led instruction. There is no pre-requisite for this course.
New York State Education Department Coaches First Aid Course – Now available to coaches in any school district!
This is the State Education Department approved first aid course designed to meet the requirements for coaches for all public school athletic programs. The course teaches participants critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid emergency until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Participants learn their role in supporting healthy participation by student athletes, rules for participation in sports, health and safety requirements and legal aspects of coaching. Participants learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. First Aid for Coaches certification is good for 3 years from completion of the course.
All coaches are required to receive an initial course consisting of 12 hours of classroom, video-based and instructor-led instruction. You must attend all sessions to be certified.
The Initial course is the pre-requisite for the 5 1/2 hour refresher course consisting of classroom, video-based and instructor-led instruction. You must attend all sessions to be certified.
