Rick Case speaks to studentsThe CTE program’s Heavy Equipment class had an exciting chance for some hands-on learning at the gravel yard owned and operated by Groton Town Highway Department.

After taking the bus from the TST BOCES campus to the gravel yard in Groton, students were greeted by Groton Highway Superintendent Rick Case and equipment manager Luke Kniskern. Under supervision students got to take turns operating the town’s Komatsu loader. They also tested their knowledge by identifying 10 different materials used in the gravel pit and around Groton.

“My goal was to allow the student to operate heavy equipment that we do not have access to operate at the school,” said TST BOCES Heavy Equipment class instructor Dale Kinney. “After speaking to Rick Case, he welcomed the idea and we are hoping to make more trips to the Town of Groton and other similar facilities as we try to improve the Heavy Equipment program at TST BOCES.”

Perhaps most importantly, Case taught the students important lessons about safety on construction sites and around heavy equipment. The trip provided students a great opportunity to work directly with and learn from professionals working in the field they are studying.
