The Smith School Dignity Committee celebrated Circle of Courage Day May 11 with the dedication of a “Buddy Bench” by the playground.
The buddy bench will help foster friendship among students. If a child would like to play but doesn’t have anyone to play with, they can sit on the buddy bench. Other students are then able to see who would like to play, and they are encouraged to invite anybody sitting on the bench to join them. This will help create new friendships and help everyone feel included.
“A buddy bench is designed to help us to make new friends and develop a stronger Smith School community,” said Candice Hough of the Dignity Committee.
The bench was built by the Career and Technical Education World of Work Outdoor Power Equipment class and installed by BOCES Facilities Services on a plot of concrete specially laid for this project. The concrete area extends wider than the bench, which provides space for the buddy bench to be inclusive for all students by including those in wheelchairs. Students in Katrina Binkewitz’s art classes painted and decorated the bench, making it a beautiful and personalized addition to the playground.
