First Aid and CPR Training

The following courses are regularly scheduled and taught at the TST BOCES campus at 555 Warren Road, Ithaca, New York 14850. We also provide “in district” classes upon request of the district for CPR/AED and AHA First Aid classes if the district has 5 or more employees that would like the class held in the district. The New York SED Coaches First Aid Initial and Refresher courses are only held at the TST BOCES Campus.

American Heart Association – Basic Life Support – BLS

The BLS Course offered at TST BOCES is the Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course from the American Heart Association designed to provide a wide variety of school professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for all school personnel including; school nurses, teachers, coaches, maintenance staff, custodians, bus drivers, administrators, support staff and aides whether certified or noncertified as well as licensed or non-licensed healthcare professionals. BLS certification is good for two years from completion of the course

The Initial Course is a four hour basic course which teaches the fundamentals of basic life support using classroom, video and instructor-led instruction. This course is required if you have not currently certified in CPR/AED or have never been trained. There is no pre-requisite for this course.

The Refresher Course is a three hour refresher which reinforces fundamental skills of basic life support using classroom, video and instructor-led instruction as well as providing updates to methods and protocols for basic life support. Current CPR/AED certification or the Initial Courses are pre-requisites for this course.

American Heart Association – Heartsaver First Aid

The American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course offered at TST BOCES is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches participants critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives.  Participants learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. Heartsaver First Aid certification is good for two years from completion of the course. There is no prerequisite for this course. The initial and refresher course is the same program.

New York State Education Department Coaches First Aid Course (Initial)

The Coaches First Aid Course offered at TST BOCES is the State Educational Department approved first aid course designed to meet the requirements for coaches for all public school athletic programs. The course teaches participants critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives.  Participants learn their role in supporting healthy participation by student athletes, rules for participation in sports, health and safety requirements and legal aspects of coaching. Participants learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. All coaches are required to receive an initial course consisting of twelve hours of classroom, video-based and instructor-led education leading to a three year coaches first aid certification. The initial course is the pre-requisite for the 5 ½ hour refresher course. You must attend all four sessions to be certified.

New York State Education Department Coaches First Aid Course (Refresher)

The Coaches First Aid Course refresher offered at TST BOCES is the State Educational Department approved first aid renewal course designed to meet the requirements for coaches for all public school athletic programs. The course reviews critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives.  The coach’s role in supporting healthy participation by student athletes, rules for participation in sports, health and safety requirements and legal aspects of coaching are reviewed. Participants review skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies.  Participants interact with each other to discuss responses to emergencies and to share experiences. The initial course is the pre-requisite for the 5 ½ hour refresher course.
